What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural reaction people experience when faced with danger, threat or stress.

Low levels of anxiety can increase alertness and enhance performance, as in exams or job interviews. Where there is real danger; high levels can assist quick action and aid your chances of survival.

However, for some, anxiety can be so overwhelming that it prevents people from living their life in the way they want.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Sweating
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Feeling uneasy

Types of anxiety disorders include:

  • Generalised anxiety disorder
  • Social phobias
  • Specific phobias
  • Panic disorders
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Post traumatic stress disorder
What is depression?

Everyone experiences feeling sad occasionally however when these are severe and have been present for some time depression may be present.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Feeling sad, hopeless and despairing
  • A loss of interest and pleasure in normal activities
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Sleeping problems
  • Tiredness
  • Concentration difficulties
  • Feeling guilty or worthless
  • Wondering if life is worth living.
  • Believing others would be better off without you

Types of depression include:

  • Major depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Dysthymic disorder
  • Cyclothymic disorder
  • Post natal depression
  • Seasonal affective disorder
